Direct the Army Corps to Expidite Planning for Partial Reconfiguration/Removal of the Long Beach Breakwater

The Long Beach Breakwater was constructed in 1949 by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to protect naval facilities and ships. In 1997 the Federal Government closed the naval shipyard and departed Long Beach, leaving the breakwater behind. Since then the City of Long Beach and the people in the region have made clear their desire to work with the Army Corps to partially remove and reconfigure the breakwater. In spite of generous funding offers by the city, resources have not yet been allocated to begin the study process that will lead to the eventual restoration of the Long Beach shoreline and coastal habitat. We petition the Administration to move quickly, and expedite this project which benefits the economy, the habitat, and the well-being of the Southern California coast.
