Federal Law Enforcement should not be contracted by private debt collectors to be the "muscle" that arrests debtors at gun point and hauls them before a Federal judge. We do not need to criminalize indebtedness in order to coerce an agreement on repayment of Federal Student Loans. Today's college graduates typically have about $27,000 in GSL debt that can become crushing debt in the early years of young careers. Sending US Marshals to drag a defaulter before a judge and then sending them a bill for $1300 for US Marshals Service is adding insult to injury. The US Marshals Service should spend their valuable time pursuing true criminals that endanger public safety. The solution is for Department of Education to offer a reasonable repayment plan that defaulters literally can't refuse.
