direct the Dept. of Immigration to stop using solitary confinement in detention facilities. It is a human rights abuse!

Created by N.B. on March 24, 2013

After reading the article in the NY Times on Sunday, March 24th/2013 about the use of solitary confinement in immigration detention facilities, I was moved to start this petition to request that the president immediately put a stop to this clear violation of human rights.
As the NY Times article explained, the U.S. relies on solitary confinement in these facilities more than any other democratic nation in the world.
Immigration offenses are civil, not criminal, offenses, and as such punishments such as solitary confinement should not be used. The sensory deprivation involved in such confinement can lead to serious, long lasting mental health problems. "Paranoia, depression, memory loss and self-mutilation are not uncommon" results. This can be considered torture and must stop.
