In order to avoid glorifying those who commit atrocities like the Newtown massacre and to sidestep the intractable debate on gun control, the Obama administration should direct the FCC to establish a two month period immediately following these atrocities where the identity of the alleged perpetrator cannot be broadcast unless there is an immediate threat to the public.
While it will be impossible to prevent the leakage of such information, it will hopefully put enough restrictions in place to put an end to the endless media circus that always follows and perpetuates such events. Furthermore, it will hopefully shift attention away from those who commit some crimes and shed a spotlight instead on the victims and first responders.
Such a measure should have broad bipartisan support.
