Unscrupulous telemarketers have been abusing the "political survey" exemption in the Do Not Call List regulations to make de facto telemarketing calls disguised as political surveys. The FCC could and should prohibit "political survey" calls from containing any other content. At present, these are used as thinly disguised openings that lead directly to pitches for the participant to "take a free cruise" which turns out to be a high-pressure sales track from which it is effectively impossible to escape, among many other scams. These abuses are not only fraudulent, but they reduce the ability of genuine survey-takers to assess the mood of the public about real issues since people are becoming conditioned to the idea that all such surveys are fake.
