When individuals receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) , this income is not taxable income as it is paid as Public Assistance. When someone files Tax Returns claiming these individuals as dependents the fax filer states to the IRS that they provided over 50% of support for the SSI Beneficiary.SSA pays SSI benefits based on someones income, resources, and living arrangements. IRS is not notified of SSI Payments and SSA is not advised that someone else is providing half support. In these cases either the Individual has not advised SSA that the tax filer is paying 1/2 support or the tax filer has fraudently filed returns claiming the support. Ssa and Irs should match records of all SSI Beneficiaries who we claim on tax returns to ensure there is no hidden income or IRS needs to review.
