Hastily passed "Stand Your Ground" laws in various states have prompted concerns in many recent cases of questionably justifiable deaths. Florida, for example, has seen a documented drastic increase of "justifiable" homicides since the law went into effect in 2005. From 2000-2005, there were an average of 13 such incidents annually. After 2005, an average of 38 incidents occurred.
While an individual does reserve the right to protect one's self when their life is in danger, these laws not only remove the duty to retreat, they make it law that an individual not even need to consider retreat, even, when it is clearly a viable option. It also allows broad interpretation on the nature of a perceived threat, providing the possibility of a false or minimal threat resulting in death.
