Advanced practice clinicians, including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, have provided safe and effective care in the United States for over four decades. They are responsible for providing the same level of care as other providers, but since 1997, have only been reimbursed at 85% of the physician rate by Medicare. There is currently a shortage of primary care providers and this inequality of reimbursement may limit the amount of Medicare patients they can afford to see, thus limiting these patients with continued access to care.
