A system of Space Based Solar Power Stations could provide gigawatts of energy to Earth's surface 360 days a year with a very minimal impact on the environment. Once in orbit they would provide power with minimal maintenance forever. Once America's energy needs have been met, additional stations can be placed over any place on Earth to export energy to other countries.
All of this was studied over thirty years ago by preeminent scientists and engineers like Gerard K. O'Neill,G. Harry Stine, T.A. Heppenheimer and others. They found it completely feasible with then current technology.
This technology is the only one that can provide power to all humanity for the next thousand years with minimal impact to the Earth and return a sense of direction to NASA's manned space program.
