Rural post offices in small towns define the town. The impact of closing these post offices is much greater than I suspect is understood in Washington DC. Consideration of the 110 proposed closing in North Dakota alone means the slow death of each town. A town without a post office means lower property values for homes, loss of businesses and jobs and end of small town life.
Many of these rural towns are where farming families retire and have a high elderly population, many can't drive to distant towns to get to a post office to get medications that must not freeze, meals and the postal carrier serves as a watch for elderly living alone. When you remove the post office you remove the safety net and force these independent people to cities and nursing homes.
