This petition is to help correct a disturbing trend in the naming of ships of the US Navy, especially its most powerful ships, aircraft carriers. These mighty vessels represent the height of US Military might and international presence. It seems shameful then to name these ships after still living or recently deceased politicians simply because they held high office, while eschewing the proud and grand names of the navy's past. These names represent not only tradition, but are a concrete representation to the nation and the world of what ideals the military fights for and the way in which they fight. Therefore, we petition the administration to name the lead ship of the nation's newest and most advanced aircraft carrier class after our country, the greatest ideal that can be fought for.
