Seismic canons are blasting sound waves 100,000 times more intense than a jet engine (190 db) to the seafloor for oil and gas exploration.
These blast will occur about every 10 seconds for days and weeks a time as the seabed from New Jersey to Florida is slowly mapped.
The blasting threatens our fisheries and coastal economies. The impact on marine life, especially dolphins and whales, will be enormous. By the U.S. Department of the Interior's own estimates, 138,500 marine mammals will be injured or killed with incalculable impact to behaviors like feeding and mating.
We don’t have to wait for a future oil spill to begin feeling the heavy price for drilling off our coasts. It is not just clicks and whistles that are being silenced.
