The total cost of the DEA from 1972 to 2009 according to the agency website was $536,367,800,000. Between 1986 to 2009, the average cost per arrest made was $9,893. According to the White House's Office of Drug Control Policy, the total value of all of the drugs sold in the U.S. is as much as $64 billion a year, giving the DEA an efficiency rate of less than 1%, and because the demand for illegal drugs is inelastic, people who are buying drugs will continue to buy them with little regard to price, turning to crime their habit. 1920-1930's prohibition increased violence made criminals rich and had not effect. If a war can be won, it doesn't take 25 years! Put that $ into the Department - Education and rehabilitation centers. You want to talk about CHANGE Obama? Save 3.3 billion a year.
