The FDA classifies fluoride as a drug. If a person chooses to supplement with dietary fluoride, it must be prescribed by a dentist or physician. Americans are being medicated without consent simply by consuming tap water. The CDC and ADA state that fluoridated water should be avoided by pregnant women and infants (drinking formula mixed with fluoridated water).
In many studies, water fluoridation has shown little effect on decreasing tooth decay and has caused increased incidences of fluorosis, developmental disturbance of dental enamel caused by excessive exposure to fluoride.
Finally, the fluoride added to our water is not a naturally occurring substance but Fluorosilicic acid, an industrial byproduct of phosphate fertilizer manufacture, whose safety has not been extensively researched.
