There is no real need for the minting of pennies. They cost more to make than they are actually worth. The government spends a large sum of money for creating pennies, which is practically useless.
Also, no one actually uses pennies all that much. They are more or less the nuisance of our wallets, therefore we do not need them.
Getting rid of the penny would do nothing to our economy, in retrospect. We would be keeping that money that we were spending on pennies, which we could spend on more important matters.
There have been other countries who have done away with the penny, and they are still successful.
