Discontinue printing the $1 bill and replace it completely with existing $1 coins.

Created by J.T. on February 13, 2012

The US Government should discontinue printing the dollar bill and replace it with the dollar coin. For the last two decades the Government Accountability Office has recommended switching to the dollar coin in order to save the American taxpayer billions of dollars. In 2011, the GAO reported that the switch would save the government a minimum of $184 million per year, or $5.5 billion over a 30-year period. Depending on certain assumptions in their analysis, this savings could be as high as $11.1 billion over 30 years. According to the Dollarcoinalliance.org, Two-Thirds of Americans support replacing the dollar bill with the dollar coin when informed of the potential government savings. According to the GAO, in Canada, the government experienced cost savings ten times their initial estimate.
