Discontinue use of the term "Islamic" in official references to terrorist insurgents in or near Iraq in the Middle East

Created by S.M. on May 08, 2015

This petition is to request that the term "Islamic" be discontinued when referencing the terrorist extremist factions operating in Iraq and Syria focused on destabilizing the existing government and establishing a "caliphate". Such organizations have no true relation to the religion of Islam and as such do not merit legitimization through terminology that implies that they do. Terms such as "ISIS: Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" or "ISIL: Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" erroneously imply that these terrorist groups are tied to an organized religion, which the leaders and members of these factions use to their advantage. Revised terminology should be enacted to avoid providing them with this benefit, and to separate legitimate practitioners of Islam from terrorist organizations.
