White House petitions are a good and vital means for the American citizenry to interact with their government officials and make their views known on a number of important topics. Too often, though, these petitions are used for matters that are illogical (state secession); mean-spirited (birther conspiracies); or simply ludicrous (building a real-life Starship Enterprise). Such petitions are a waste of Internet bandwidth, provide no real solution to the problems they intend to address (whether actual or perceived), mock the concept of true and actual debate and only provide fodder for late-night talk-show hosts, paid political pundits, TV talking heads and hate-speech websites. This is a valuable means of expressions and shouldn't be squandered. It has to stop, and it has to stop now.
