The electoral college had its purpose back when this country was founded.
It was impractical to get all the voters together to cast votes for national level elections, so they voted locally and had representatives take their votes for them.
This could mean days or weeks of travel to get to the voting site.
Today we can cross the country in hours, we can transfer Megabytes of data in seconds.
We no longer need representatives to cast a vote for us.
