Although the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) was discontinued in 2011, it remains on the books, and has already been discussed as a possible way to set up a national registration for Muslims. Any such registration system based on national origin, ethnicity, or religion, is anathema to a free society, and historically in authoritarian regimes has been a precursor to mass incarceration, deportations, and even genocide. President Obama should take immediate executive action to end this program, and not leave it available for the next president to abuse.
