The new assault weapons ban and high capacity magazine ban is not going to have an effect on crime just like the last one didn't. The real problem is how criminals obtain guns. A mass ban on "americas favorite rifle" hurts a lot of law abiding gun owners, with very little effect on actual gun crime. Do you punish the masses for the crimes of the few?
