The reason why the Electoral college was created is no longer needed.
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines... VOTE as: the collective opinion or verdict of a body of persons expressed by voting.
When the electoral college was first formed in 1788, information was hard to come by. It wasn't possible for candidates to reach every person, therefore the people would not be informed as to each candidates position. They didn't want the vote to fall to people who may not know all the facts. Some thought that Congress should select the president, others thought it should be based purely on popular decision. The Electoral College was the compromise. In today's world of technology the inability to campaign to voters is no longer an issue, therefore the need for the electoral college no longer exists
