The U.S. should not ask other nations to do what it is not willing to do itself. The Golden Rule should be applied. It is arrogant and condescending to demand other nations not do something that we do. The best example is sanctions against nations that the U.S. maintains are trying to develop nuclear weapons - Iran, where the claim is highly debatable, and North Korea, where the claim is credible. We have a huge nuclear weapons stockpile, and are investing large amounts in upgrading those weapons. We are also the only country to have used nuclear weapons, and when we did we deliberately targeted civilian populations. We need to establish and implement a plan to completely dismantle our nuclear weapons to have any credibility in asking other nations not to have them.
