Repeal the Discovery Doctrine, U.S. law since 1823. This law continues to do harm to Native Americans, and all of us.

The Discovery Doctrine maintained that Native Americans could not own land, that land ownership was reserved for those who were white and Christian, as members of a white Christian nation such as England, France, or since 1823, the United States. This law is still being used to deny Indigenous land claims. It is far past time to re-evaluate the cultural attitudes that went into creating this law, for the benefit of all people. We can share! We can live together! We can listen to and learn from Indigenous people. Repealing this offensive law is a step toward undoing the damage that settlerism and colonialism have done to the culture and environment. This action would create the possibility of America being stronger, more free, and richer in culture.
