Currently, there are student loan repayment plans that are income based (for large debts vs. income), which you pay on for 20 or 25 years and then the remainder of the loan is forgiven. However, the amount that is forgiven can be considered taxable income for that year. Some unlucky grads have a balance that continues to grow, despite making faithful payments (that cost more than their mortgage), and could be in a heap of trouble having to pay income tax on hundreds of thousands of dollars in one year (after having paid their loan terms). Education is not free, but people should not be punished for bettering themselves, and the current system makes it almost impossible (or at the least extremely expensive) for lower class people to better themselves.
