Most of the resistance to electronic cigarettes seems to be based on misconceptions about the risks to users and those around them. Efforts to ban them (for instance on airline flights) predict discomfort or harm to other passengers with little but questionable, anecdotal data to substantiate the predictions.
Any governmental (or corporate) action to limit the use of electronic cigarettes by citizens trying to quit tobacco use should balance real, measured risk against the general public benefits of this much-safer alternative to tobacco use.
This may not be popular with the tobacco lobby or citizens with a blanket prejudice against tobacco users, but it is in the public interest.
