Medicare officials are considering a measure that would penalize doctors who order routine prostate-cancer screening tests for their patients, as part of a federal effort to define and reward quality in health-care services. This is a very bad idea. Prostate cancer represents 13.3% of all new cancer cases in the U.S. It is the third most common cancer in the U.S. The latest numbers show that in 2015, it is estimated that there will be 220,800 new cases of prostate cancer and an estimated 27,540 people will die of this disease. Prostate cancer screening saves lives.
