DoD & Veterans Administration Tracking/Reporting of Family Member Suicides

Created by D.R. on January 24, 2013

The Department of Defense and Veterans Administration do must acknowledge, track nor report family member suicides. These numbers are of the utmost importance as they can assist in identifying gaps in Unit Training and health care. I served for over 22yrs and lost my 13 yr old son Nicholas to suicide in 2010. Being a Suicide Survivor forced me to see how family members are "non-reportable" and ultimatly not essential to the mission or overall readiness. This is so far from the truth as it impacts not only the readiness of Soldiers the lack of reporting and acknowledgment instills the feelings as our family members are of no concern. These feelings lead to "Moral Injury" to the Soldier, Veteran or Retiree. Military family member suicides impact readiness and our families for a lifetime.
