U.S. Navy Mess Attendant First Class Doris Miller, was
awarded the Navy Cross for exceptional courage, presence of mind, and
complete disregard for his personal safety while serving on the Battleship
U.S.S. West Virginia (BB-48), during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor,
December 7, 1941. Miller, in the face of a hostile fire, assisted in moving
his mortally wounded Captain, to safety, he then manned and
operated a machine gun, on which he had never been trained , directing fire
at attacking Japanese aircraft, he is believed to have shot down at least 5
aircraft before being ordered to leave his battle station.. The actions of
