This petition demands the doubling of the currently assigned funds for the clean-up and decontamination of Vieques. Appropriating more funds from EPA's Hazardous Substance Superfund will help achieve a faster decontamination of the former Atlantic Fleet Weapons Training Facility, which was present and active in Vieques until 2003.
Even after a decade of the U.S. Navy departure, only 5% of the munitions left behind by military activity and bombings have been removed. The health quality of the people of Vieques has been profoundly affected. There is a 30% higher rate of cancer for Viequenses than for those living on the main island of Puerto Rico.
We need your help in order to accomplish this goal. Viequenses have already had to sacrifice more than enough in the name of national defense.
