In the State of the Union address, President Obama backed the findings of a high-level commission that issued a report on how the U.S. could double its energy productivity by cutting energy consumption. Mr Obama issued a goal for America: "let’s cut in half the energy wasted by our homes and businesses over the next twenty years and called for a partnership between federal and state governments. The states with the best ideas to create jobs and lower energy bills by constructing more efficient buildings will receive federal support to help make it happen.”
The plan would generate a $169 billion yearly net return after 2030 and save the average American household more than $1,000 in annual energy costs.
