draft legislation to give consumers the ability to cancel services in a timely manner.

Created by J.M. on August 12, 2014

There are currently laws protecting consumers regarding whether telemarketers can contact you (Do-Not-Call Implementation Act of 2003) and controlling spam (CAN-SPAM Act of 2003). There are no laws correcting industry standard practices of forcing consumers to sit through several attempts to maintain services in which they no longer wish to receive. Telecom companies can keep consumers on hold for greater than 3 hours, disagree with simple and repetitive requests to cancel their service, and in general control the process of people's ability to cancel their service. Legislation should be created in order to expedite simple cancellations. Failure should be investigatable by the FTC and possibly result in a fine. If you can sign up online, you should be able to cancel online too.
