Allowing workers to legally opt-out of mandatory hours beyond 40-60/week will create jobs. A lot of jobs. Similarly, increasing employers penalty on overtime wages from 1.5x to 2x or 2.5x would have a similar effect, thereby reducing current unemployment levels.
Requiring a worker to be performing work or unpaid work related activities (travel, commuting) for more than 12 hours/day, 7 days/week should be recognized as a violation of human rights.
The administration should champion the introduction of legislation that allows American workers to refuse unreasonable mandatory overtime. At present, employers may require workers to remain at a job site for any length of time without breaks, and the same workers may be required to return to the job site with inadequate time to rest.
