As a Rehabilitative Services student at the University of Texas Pan American, I have learned the importance of Person First Language in the Rehabilitation Process. For example, my classmates and I have been taught that while a person may be a "Wheel Chair User" he is NOT "Wheel Chair BOUND". As well, a person may "Live with or experience the symptoms of their Disability" but does NOT "Suffer with a Disability". Furthermore, a person may have a disability but it certainly is not their only defining characteristic. They have a disability, they are not DISABLED. I'd like to be able to watch local and national news programs without constantly feeling that the reporters are totally ignorant to this kind of speech. I'd like to see this change. Please sign this petition if you feel the same.
