The current and proposed interest rates for student loans are higher than mortgage rates, new auto loans, personal lines of credit and higher than some credit card rates. To charge extra for borrowed funds used in the pursuit of a college education stymies the achievement of the American dream. Education should not be a privilege only afforded by the already wealthy. Borrowing funds towards a future of becoming a model citizen, contributing to a worthy profession, and becoming a future solid tax-paying citizen should not be hindered by exorbitant interest rates. If America wants the future use of our intelligent and talented youth, then we must give them every chance to attain that future without a detriment to their earning power before they even begin to contribute to society.
