Eliminate asset forfeiture without due process

Created by C.C. on January 04, 2016

Asset forfeiture laws are being abused, and state and local laws have been rewritten to get around constitutional safeguards so they can get "their piece of the pie".

Today, if I have $5000 in my wallet to buy a used car and I get stopped for a traffic violation, the officer can seize it as "ill gotten gains", and I have to go to court at my expense to prove it was legitimate.

These laws should be rewritten at the federal level to conform to the constitution and guarantee due process before assets are seized.

Furthermore, state and local laws should be required to conform to the new federal laws when they are rewritten to prevent abuse.
