For 2012, the maximum taxable earnings amount for Social Security taxes is $110,100. Simply put, that means every dollar earned over that amount is exempt from Social Security taxes. We could insure Social Security's solvency for the rest of this century by eliminating that cap and taxing every dollar of earned income, as well as bonuses and exercised stock options. In fact, such a move might allow us to increase benefits, lower the full retirement age to 60-62, and thus open up jobs for younger workers by making it easier to retire.
