Current civil forfeiture laws allow police to confiscate money and valuables regardless of whether or not a crime was committed or charges were filed. This happens often during routine traffic stops. In many cases, police departments keep this money for themselves. In contrast to the ideal that one is innocent until proven guilty, in civil forfeiture, you are presumed guilty simply for having cash on your person. We need to stop allowing the police to steal from Americans.
