Most American adults will tell you they don't like Columbus Day or feel comfortable celebrating it. So if we can have that conversation in our day to day lives, why can't our decision makers have that same realization? Why is the issue of Columbus Day any different from the other issues of racism and historical inaccuracy that we are currently seeking to change? Eliminate Columbus Day as a National holiday and show to each other and the world and the indigenous people, that we can learn from mistakes and rewrite history to be accurate and reflective of our shared values!
Also, consider this...Columbus Day was established in the 1930s by a male Catholic organization called the Knights of Columbus because they wanted a male Catholic role model for children. I think we can do better.
