The electoral college forces the votes of people in some states to be worth as little one third (1/3) the vote of people in other states.
Ex:
Wyoming:1 electoral college vote for every 165,000 people
Texas & California: 1 electoral college vote for every 615,000 people
1 WY vote = 3.7 TX or CA votes
The alternate voting system would allow people to show support for less popular candidates while still ensuring a meaningful contribution to the election. (In the alternate voting system the candidate with the least amount of votes, after all votes have been tallied, is eliminated from the race. If the person you voted for is eliminated, and you listed an alternate vote, your vote then goes towards your alternate. This continues/repetes until someone has more than 50% of the popular vote.
