By eliminating the Electoral college we hope to eliminate an election system which does not represent everyone equally. Under the current system presidential candidates will spend half to over half of their campaign spending in 4-5 states (FL, PA, OH, and VA in the previous election). The system also discourages voters in in non-swing states to stay at home on election day knowing that their vote doesn't make an impact on a large scale. Finally by counting the five times in American history where a candidate has won the Electoral college and lost the popular vote we get a system for electing the leader of the free world that has a five percent failure rate.
