When people think of the U.S., they think of a democracy. However, the United States doesn’t have a true democracy because there is not one vote per person. A presidential candidate can win the presidential title without having the majority vote; the definition of a democracy. Technically, the citizens vote for their electors, who then cast the ballot for the president. Also, with the Electoral College in place, only the swing states are campaigned in. Given the current circumstances of our voting system, independents have a small chance of winning the election. If we eliminated the electoral college, people would be more likely to vote for independents, and it would discourage the extreme, two party system there is now.
