Eliminate the Electoral College when there are only 2 candidates running for President.

The Electoral College doesn't represent a state's individuals, because it doesn't count the votes of the less popular candidate. The Electoral votes are not distributed evenly throughout states. Aren't our presidents supposed to be elected by the people?
Some may argue that the Electoral College is beneficial when there are more than 2 candidates in the final election, but that is a very rare case. In the 2000 election, George Bush had 50,456,002 votes, and Al Gore had 50,999,897, but Bush won the election because the Electoral College gave him 271 votes and Gore 266.
In 2012, about 57% of America voted in the election. Why aren't more people voting? Is it because they feel like their voice isn't heard? Do they feel that their vote doesn't count? Let's reconsider our voting system.
