The ethanol requirement for gasoline was intended to provide cleaner air for the country. Further research has indicated that ethanol does not reduce total emissions from vehicles after taking all variables into effect. The ethanol requirement does great harm to the economy. The ethanol subsidies total 24 billion dollars annually that could go directly toward reducing the deficit. Corn used for ethanol could be used toward food instead of gasoline lowering the price of food and feed. Gasoline would also be cheaper because refiners would be able to take out a step in the creation of gasoline. 15% ethanol has 10% less energy than pure gasoline so fuel economy would rise without ethanol. Lets get the government out of ethanol production and let the marketplace decide if ethanol is worthwhile.
