Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves injecting a mixture of water, toxic chemicals and sand under very high pressure into underground rock formations to crack the rock open and release natural gas. This practice is currently widespread, and is completely exempt from all Federal environmental laws. The chemicals used in the process do not have to be disclosed. The fracturing process causes the chemicals to reach surface streams and people's wells. Chemicals are also released to the air. Huge amounts of water are consumed. Most fracking wells are on ranch land, where beef and milk cattle are drinking contamined water and eating grass contaminated by fallout from the bad air. Vegetable crops are also contaminated, so it is reasonable that the chemicals are in our food supply.
