eliminate the mandatory labeling of irradiated food products

Created by H.G. on February 18, 2013

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all foods treated by irradiation labeled with both the words "Treated with Radiation" or "Treaded by Irradiation" and the Radura logo.

Consumers perceive the terms "radiation" and "irradiation" negatively. The current labeling requirements mislead the consumer and deter them buying irradiated food products. Irradiation does not make foods radioactive nor does it change its nutritional or sensory quality. In fact, the FDA endorses the safety of irradiated foods. Irradiation is used effectively in the prevention of food born illness, preservation, and sterilization.

The FDA needs to eliminate the mandatory labeling requiring the words "radiation" and "irradiation." Labeling should only include the more consumer friendly Radura logo.
