Eliminate the marriage penality on taxpayers

Created by M.C. on December 19, 2012

Married taxpayers pay more in taxes after marriage than when single due to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) imposed on married filers, and the expanded tax bracket for married couples.

This petition proposes to implement the following:
1) Correction of the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) that is imposed on married taxpayers, so that the calculation is performed on each individual as if they were single rather than married, and

2) Allow married taxpayers to choose "single" as a filing option even though they are married, as a means to correct the AMT that is applying the marrriage penalty to married couples.

3) Continue to allow married couples to also choose the tax status' of married filing jointly, or married filing single, if so desired, along with the option noted in item-2 above.
