The United States is losing millions of dollars by making coins that cost more to make than they are worth. The penny is worth 1 cent but is costs around 1.7 cents to make. Similarly, the nickel is worth 5 cents but costs around 8.1 cents to make. If the United States Mint simply adopted a system like those used in countries like Canada and the Netherlands, it is estimated that around $105 million dollars of taxpayer money wouldn't be wasted on obsolete denominations of currency, but instead could be spent on something else.
