The penny now costs around double its value to produce. The nickel also costs more to produce than it is worth. The purchasing power of the dime is so little as to be essentially worthless. For comparison, a gumball typically costs a quarter from a machine.
All of this points to the fact that the penny, nickel, and dime are obsolete and, I believe, should be removed from circulation.
Though this is not a critical issue facing the country, the elimination of these low-value coins would be a positive step to simplify the lives of average Americans and save the country money as well. I implore the Obama administration to begin the discussion to set a timeline to phase out these obsolete forms of currency.
