The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have responsibilities to maintain the safety of blood/organs donations. Regulations require donated blood/organs to be tested for infectious agents to ensure safety.
Current regulations severely restrict, or prohibit, donations of blood/organs from homosexuals. These archaic policies were adopted during the early onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Regulations have not kept pace with modern testing methods.
It is time to end these discriminatory regulations and provide life saving treatment to patients who need them from donors willing and able to give them.
Safety can be ensured without discrimination.
